Exorcists- they are supposed to exist to protect the living from the supernatural. But out there, there are exorcists who don't fit with that idea- they'll just protect whoever the innocent one is. Ella Clark is one such exorcist, who is currently living in the city of Verdan. With her companions, the ghost Tokiko and the human with a ghost's spirit, Akiyuki, she makes her living performing exorcisms. However, if you seek her services, beware, for she might decide that you are the guilty one.
Ella Clark is a eighteen year old girl, who works as an exorcist. Her powers awoke after she awakened from a five year coma she fell into after becoming involved in a traffic accident. Although she is very powerful, she is considered an outcast in the exorcist society because she is notorious for not always listening to her clients. Often she ends up making her own judgments of people's innocence and has been known to let vengeful spirits rampage if she feels that it is justified. When exorcising, she mostly uses magical circles and talismans, and traps her prey in magic gourds from which they cannot escape.
Despite Ella's notorious reputation, she still does get work from time to time and makes a living off of the funds from that, and her part time job working at a maid cafe. She lives with her roommates, Tokiko and Akiyuki in a old Japanese-style house at the edge of the city which is rumored to be rather haunted. Ella is very comfortable around ghosts and spirits, however, as she spent the five years she was comatose in the realm of the spirits.
Ella seems to be a pleasant girl, but every so often she gets a mischievous smirk on her face and seems to be up to no good. She is very good at detecting spirits wherever they are and whatever form they might take. She seems to work closely with Setsuna Hiyama from the police department, who often tips her off to odd sounding cases.
Tokiko Akamatsu is a twenty-six year old ghost woman who is Ella's partner in crime, so to speak. Ella was supposed to exorcise her from the home that she once haunted, but instead freed her so that she could travel with her, finding that she liked the ghost woman. Tokiko is learning to take on a solid form at the moment, but she can't hold it for very long even under normal circumstances, so it falls that most people really can't see her.
Tokiko is a kind woman whose life was cut short by illness. For a long time she wasn't even aware that she was dead, and kept on wandering her house, doing her daily routines. When her old family moved out, and a new one moved in, they became distressed at the strange things happening around their house. She is very grateful to Ella, and wants to help her in any way she can, although she's not a very strong spirit at all. She tends to always put others before herself.
Akiyuki Katsura is a nineteen year old man who works with Ella. He seems to have strong spiritual power, which is probably due to the fact that he is a ghost possessing a human body. He was an old spirit that was sealed within an old house, which he had haunted as long as he could remember. Ella crossed paths with him when she was brought to the house to exorcise a murderous spirit', as a dead body had been found in the house where nobody live anymore. With no other explanation, people blamed the ghost, who at that point had grown so weak, he could barely even make his presence known to Ella.
Ella wasn't fooled, however, and hunted down the true murderer, who was very much a human. She brought him back to the house and removed the man's own spirit, and made it a vessel for Akiyuki. She left the man to be the spirit of the house instead, and placed around the house a powerful barrier so that none could enter it, and the man would be alone in that place forever. Since then, Akiyuki has joined her on her jobs, his spiritual power recovering as she allowed him to absorb it from troublesome spirits she encountered.
Akiyuki isn't really sure how he became a ghost, or who he was before he died, since his memory has become hazy after so many years. He did have some trouble adjusting to the human body at first, but he's gotten the hang of it after the past two years he's spent in it. He still tends to be out of the loop when it comes to technology and anything modern, really.
Lawrence Lewis is Ella's boss, a twenty-eight year old man and a powerful exorcist. He was cast out of the White Cross two years before encountering Ella, while she was still in her coma. Her parents had given up on her ever waking up and had left her in the hospital and had moved away. Lawrence sensed something from the girl, and fought to have her continue her life, knowing that she would wake up very soon. He has taken care of Ella ever since she has woken up, and has trained her in the ways of exorcism. He uses tactics similar to Ella's, and his reputation is even more notorious than the young girl's.
Lawrence too, spent a time in the spirit world, wandering in there when he was only a young boy, around five years old. Although he spent ten years in the spirit world, when he emerged from it, he discovered that almost no time had passed in the human world, and nobody recognized him anymore. He decided to make a living sealing away evil spirits and protecting those who meant no one any harm. He joined the White Cross for awhile, but their differing views caused them to split soon after.
He is homosexual, though you wouldn't really think it, since he's prone to flirting with women if he thinks it'll get him a discount on something. His aging has gone haywire after his time in the spirit realm, so it's hard to pin down an exact age on him- he only looks around twenty-eight. Although he did eventually reconcile with his mother, he never felt that he fit in with his family any longer, and never ended up living with them again.
Kagura Namiki is a twenty-seven year old member of the Verdan Police Force, who works on homicide. Despite the fact that her job requires her to deal with dead bodies, she is very bad with things like spirits and ghosts because of her family, who were all exorcists. Kagura, however, lacked the talent to perform exorcisms, but still gave off a spiritual aura that was considered delicious to more malevolent spirits. She was hunted by them constantly growing up, until one day it suddenly seemed to have stopped. Nevertheless, the trauma remained behind.
As a police officer, Kagura wants to uncover the truth and bring bad people to justice. Her upbringing has made her possess a fiery sense of justice, so sometimes she ends up doing things that are frowned upon by the police force. Although she sees in Ella a fellow lover of justice, she isn't quite sure about her methods, and can't really bring herself to spend too much time around her, since her time in the spirit world gave her the smell of a spirit.
Kagura is an old friend of Setsuna, and has known him since middle school. She seems to have affection for him, but at the same time, sometimes feels nervous around him for reasons she doesn't quite understand. They work as partners on the force, though she isn't quite sure about him leaking case information to a civilian.
Setsuna Hiyama is a twenty-seven year old member of the Verdan Police Force, who works on homicide. He is the partner of Kagura and has been a long time friend of hers, as well as her romantic interest. He seems to be a nice guy, although he can be somewhat clumsy and isn't always altogether. He has trouble being honest with his own feelings, and can't bring himself to confess to Kagura even though he knows she likes him back. It's almost as if he's terrified of taking a step forward in their relationship.
Which is somewhat understandable, when you consider the fact that he's not actually human. Setsuna is actually the guardian spirit of the Hiyama family, taken on human form. His true form is that of a large smoky black dog demon. Although he was very old by the time Namiki was born, he found himself strangely attached to her in a way that he had been to no other member of the family. However, as her fear of spirits grew, she avoided the spirit more and more, leaving him feeling conflicted. Because she was afraid of him just like she was of other spirits, he couldn't get near her to protect her when she needed it.
Eventually, on the advice of Kagura's grandfather, he decided to take on a human form and approach her that way. Becoming the fourteen year old Setsuna Hiyama, he transferred into Kagura's class and became close friends with her. The attacks on Kagura have never really stopped, but now that he can get close to her again, he can send them away without her ever realizing it. Although when on his second job, so to speak, he becomes a lot more serious and a lot less clumsy, that part of him is no less real than the face he shows in front of Kagura. He decided that he liked Ella after meeting her, and realized having a good exorcist in town would help keep Kagura safe as well, and became partners with her.
Issac Lee is the chief of the Verdan Police Force, a thirty-seven year old man. He has a tendency to box in people's ears when he's displeased with them, and is known for always speaking his mind. Although he is unable to perform exorcisms, he still has a very strong spiritual sense, in the fact that his left eye sees people's true souls, so that he can tell when people are possessed. He can't see ghosts unless they are possessing someone, but he can sense them. Needless to say, his interactions with Setsuna are always awkward since he can't shake the image from his mind that he's really a giant freaking dog.
Issac doesn't really like Ella and Lawrence and supports the White Cross more than them, but he does let the two live in his town so long as he personally doesn't catch them doing anything in the morally gray area. Also because he's pretty sure that Setsuna would bite his head off if he forced them out.
Audery Walker is a member of the White Cross, an exorcism group that are well known throughout the world. She channels her power through prayer beads and rosaries, and it's mainly her job to seal the movements of spirits. She works with Andrea, and is the nicer of the pair. She doesn't seem to hate Ella and Lawrence, and lives with an agree to disagree policy with them. She actually gets along quite well with Tokiko, as she knows there are perfectly pleasant spirits out there. Audery contemplates leaving the White Cross from time to time, but decided to stay in order to protect good spirits that were vilified by bad people and lets them escape. She is twenty years old.
Andrea Hall is a member of the White Cross, and Andrea's partner. She is a very powerful exorcist and requires nothing to channel her power, having trained to control it since she was very young. She comes from a long line of powerful exorcists and is proud of her heritage. It has, however, made her arrogant, and she seems to be convinced that there is no such thing as a good spirit in the world, just those trying to fool you. She is twenty-two years old but she's always looked older than she actually is. Please don't confuse her age though, or she'll kick your ass.
